Teaching Chess
My husband has been teaching the older boys to play chess lately. One thing that can be difficult about playing games with kids is trying to determine when to let them win and when to start playing with your full ability.
My husband found an interesting solution to that problem for chess. He plays using his full ability, but he handicaps himself by starting without a powerful piece (or pieces), such as the queen. This way the kids don't feel like he's letting them win, but they also have a chance to win.
Actually, Big D has gotten so good that he beat Bob the other day when Bob was using all his pieces and playing with his full ability!

I've been attempting to teach my 4 year to play. We're just concentrating on how the pieces move and what each piece is right now. So far he's intrigued. There's alot of helpful books out there written by grandmasters on teaching chess to children. I've found some of them helpful on the dilemma you posed.
